Getting a Driver’s License in Florida: The Basics

Taking your Florida TLSAE course online with DriverEdToGo gives you a convenient way to complete your first driver education requirement at 18 or older. Our Florida-approved, 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course—also called the drug and alcohol course—fits around your work, school, and everyday responsibilities.

Florida generally requires TLSAE for first-time license applicants age 18 and older who have never been licensed in another jurisdiction. Certain qualifying school driver education courses can satisfy the education requirement instead.

Here’s the road ahead at a glance:

  • Complete your education requirement: Finish the Florida-approved, 4-hour TLSAE course if it applies to you.
  • Pass the required exams: Complete the Class E Knowledge Exam and vision and hearing screening.
  • Build your driving skills: Obtain a learner’s license if you need supervised practice on public roads before your driving test.
  • Earn your Class E license: Pass the driving skills test, provide the required documents, and pay the applicable fees.

Completing TLSAE satisfies the applicable education requirement. You must still complete Florida’s other licensing steps before driving independently.

Which Florida Course Do You Need?

If you’re 18 or older and have never held a driver’s license, our 4-hour TLSAE course is designed for you. It covers traffic laws, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving, and the decisions that help keep you and others safe.

If you have already been licensed in another state or country, or completed qualifying school driver education, check with your driver license office before enrolling. You may qualify for an exemption.

Under 18? Florida began requiring the separate 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety course, known as DETS, for new teen applicants on August 1, 2025, subject to applicable exemptions. Our adult TLSAE course does not replace that teen requirement. This DriverEdToGo offering is for adults age 18 and older.

How to Complete Your Florida TLSAE Course Online and Get Licensed

Step 1: Complete Your 4-Hour TLSAE Course

Start with your required driver education. Our Florida-approved course covers alcohol and drug impairment, Florida traffic laws, responsible driving, and sharing the road safely.

Study on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Your progress saves automatically, so you can complete the required four hours across multiple sessions.

After you successfully finish, your course completion is reported electronically to Florida’s licensing system. Completing the course does not replace the official knowledge exam or driving skills test.

Step 2: Complete Your Application and Required Exams

Before your appointment, review your driver license or tax collector office’s document checklist. The documents you need depend on your citizenship or immigration status and whether your name has changed.

Generally, you’ll need to:

  • Provide acceptable proof of identity and lawful presence.
  • Provide proof of your Social Security number, when required.
  • Provide two acceptable proofs of Florida residential address.
  • Complete vision and hearing screening.
  • Pass the Class E Knowledge Exam.
  • Pay the applicable licensing and testing fees.

The Class E Knowledge Exam has 50 questions, and you must answer at least 40 correctly—80%—to pass. It covers Florida traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving.

Applicants 18 and older must take the knowledge exam in person. Your TLSAE lessons and PrepWizard practice are online, but they do not replace the official exam.

Florida’s policy effective February 6, 2026, requires driver license knowledge and skills exams to be administered in English and prohibits language translation services. Contact your testing office in advance if you need disability-related testing accommodations.

Step 3: Practice Before Your Driving Test

Adults are not required to obtain a learner’s license before receiving a Class E license if they can complete all required steps and pass the tests. However, you need a learner’s license to practice driving on public roads before you are licensed.

With a Florida learner’s license, you must:

  • Drive with a properly licensed driver age 21 or older seated beside you.
  • Drive only during daylight hours for the first three months.
  • After the first three months, drive no later than 10:00 p.m.
  • Never drive alone.

These learner’s-license restrictions apply even if you are 18 or older.

Adults are not subject to the teen requirement to hold a learner’s license for 12 months or certify 50 practice hours. Take the time you need to become comfortable controlling the vehicle, checking traffic, parking, and making safe decisions before scheduling your driving test.

Step 4: Pass Your Driving Test and Get Your Class E License

When you’re ready, schedule your Class E driving skills test. Follow your testing location’s instructions for bringing a safe vehicle with valid registration and proof of insurance.

The test evaluates your ability to operate the vehicle safely and follow traffic rules. After you pass and meet the remaining application requirements, you can receive your Florida Class E driver’s license.

At 18 or older, the nighttime restrictions that apply specifically to licensed 16- and 17-year-olds do not apply. Follow any individual restrictions printed on your license, such as a corrective-lenses requirement.

Florida Driving Laws You Should Know

Adult and Teen Licensing Rules Are Different

Adults 18 and older follow the adult licensing process described above. Teen applicants have additional requirements.

For teens, a learner’s license is available starting at 15. Before receiving a Class E license, applicants under 18 generally must hold their learner’s license for at least 12 months, meet the state’s driving-record requirements, and have certification of at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night. A Class E license is available starting at 16.

For licensed teens:

  • Age 16: Driving is restricted between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
  • Age 17: Driving is restricted between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Exceptions apply when driving directly to or from work or when accompanied by a properly licensed driver age 21 or older. These age-based restrictions end at 18. Learner’s-license restrictions remain in effect until you obtain your Class E license.

Florida’s Phone Laws

Florida prohibits texting while driving. Handheld wireless-device use is also prohibited in designated school crossings, school zones, and qualifying work zones. The work-zone restriction applies when construction personnel are present or operating equipment on or immediately adjacent to the road.

Set your navigation before you leave, silence notifications, and pull over safely when you need to use your phone.

Florida’s Move Over Law

Florida’s Move Over law protects emergency responders, roadside workers, and people near disabled vehicles.

On roads with multiple lanes traveling in your direction, move out of the lane closest to a covered stopped vehicle when safe. Covered disabled vehicles include those displaying warning or hazard lights, using emergency flares or signage, or with people visibly present.

If you cannot safely move over, or you are on a two-lane road, slow to 20 mph below the posted limit when the limit is 25 mph or higher. When the posted limit is 20 mph or lower, slow to 5 mph.

Dangerous Excessive Speeding

Florida treats certain extreme speeding as a criminal offense. The dangerous excessive speeding law applies when a driver travels:

  • 50 mph or more above the posted speed limit, or
  • 100 mph or more in a way that threatens people or property or interferes with another vehicle’s operation.

These violations can result in criminal penalties, including fines and jail time. Follow posted limits and reduce your speed further when weather, visibility, or traffic requires it.

Florida Insurance Requirements

For a typical Florida-registered passenger vehicle, the required minimum insurance includes:

  • $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP).
  • $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL).

Maintain the required coverage throughout the registration period, including when the vehicle is not being driven. Before canceling coverage without replacing it, arrange to surrender your license plate to avoid a possible suspension.

PIP helps cover eligible injury-related expenses regardless of fault, subject to policy limits and legal requirements. PDL covers damage you cause to someone else’s property. These coverages are different from bodily injury liability, which addresses injuries you cause to others, and collision or comprehensive coverage for your own vehicle.

Additional requirements may apply based on your driving history or circumstances. Ask your insurer about suitable coverage for your vehicle and household drivers.

TLSAE completion does not guarantee an insurance discount. Ask your insurer whether it recognizes this specific course before counting on savings.

Florida TLSAE for First-Time Drivers 18 and Older

Our Florida-approved TLSAE course helps you complete your education requirement entirely online.

The four-hour course covers:

  • The effects of alcohol and drugs on driving.
  • Florida traffic laws and driver responsibilities.

  • Sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.

Work through the lessons in manageable sessions while keeping your progress saved. Once you successfully finish, continue with your required licensing exams and application.
